The MacArthur Dancers have had an amazing dance season from September 2016 to September 2017! With Competitions, Performances and Events galore – we had super success and amazing opportunities. Hard work does pay off-!
THE AMAZING RACE CANADA. Iona, NS
We started the season with our dancers and Kelly starring on ‘The Amazing Race Canada’. Episode 9 was held at the Highland Village in Iona, Cape Breton – and the set was a Highland Games. Our dancers performed with contestants – Ainslie and Breanna taught the couples a simplified version of the Seann Triubhas – and Kelly was the judge. An amazing and beautiful day for our television roles!
THE ACOUSTIC ROOTS FESTIVAL. Mira, NS
Each year we dance at the beautiful Two Rivers Wildlife Park, host of the ‘Acoustic Roots Festival’. This little Festival continues to grow!
THE UNITED WAY KICK OFF CAMPAIGN. Sydney, NS
Each year we do many events to support our community. A very important event is the ‘United Way Kick Off Campaign’, which supports families in need in our community. On this day, civil servants from our area swim across 5 harbours in Nova Scotia, starting at the Sydney Boardwalk. We dance to entertain the guests during this event annually.
SDTA SCHOLARSHIPS CONFERENCE. Moncton, NB
8 dancers from our school were nominated for the ‘Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance Scholarships’, selected from Dance Exam excellence in Theory. 6 members were able to attend the program in Moncton in November, and we came home with 7 awards. Drea Shepherd won 1st in the Theory Award, and came 3rd Overall in North America, and Olivia Burke also came 4th. Amazing!
A CEILIDH OF CAPERS. Louisbourg, NS
To fundraiser for Scotland, we had our very own Ceilidh – which was held at the beautiful Louisbourg Playhouse, and consisted of a cast of Cape Breton dancers, musicians, singers and storytellers. We raised over $1200.00, and it was a wonderful show.
JOHN ALLAN CAMPBELL TRIBUTE CONCERT. Sydney, NS
John Allan is a legend in Cape Breton, and we were honoured to perform at this concert in his honour, held at the Big Fiddle (Joan Harris Pavillon), on the Sydney Boardwalk.
CBU PIPE BAND CHRISTMAS CONCERT. Sydney, NS
THE BARRA MACNEILS CHRISTMAS TOUR. Glace Bay & Halifax, NS
We had our 3rd annual run with the ‘Barra MacNeil’s Christmas Tour’, this year dancing both shows at the Savoy Theatre, as well as hitting the road for the Halifax shows at the beautiful Rebecca Cohn Theatre. Definitely a favourite event of the year for us!
CANADA 150 METIS HOMECOMING FESTIVAL. Rocky Mountain House, Alberta
6 of our dancers were invited to perform on Alberta in February, at the ‘Canada 150 Metis Homecoming Festival’. Held in the National Park, in the mountains, it was a beautiful weekend of performances. We even had the honour of dancing with the famous Sierra Noble-! We had a rough start flying out after a major snowstorm in Cape Breton, but we got there – and we even had time to tour the Rocky Mountains, skate on Lake Louise and see Banff.
NOVA SCOTIA MUSIC HALL OF FAME SHOWCASE. Sydney, NS
What an honour to be invited to perform at the ‘Nova Scotia Music Hall of Fame Inductees Showcase’. Musical legends Joella Foulds, Harry Hibbs, Natalie MacMaster and Gene MacLellan were inducted – and the line up included so many amazing performers. The girls danced 4 pieces to each of the nominees sets, with their favourite CB house band.
NOVA SCOTIA PROVINCIAL HIGHLAND DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Sydney, NS
This past April, our dance school hosted the ‘Nova Scotia Provincial Championhsips and Selection Meet’. This is the event which selects the NS Highland Dance Team, and then the chosen dancers go off to represent NS at the Canadian Championships (held in Charlottetown, PEI this year). Super proud to have two representatives from the school: Drea Shepherd (2nd Runner-Up: 12-13 years) and Olivia Burke (Champion: 10-11 years). We also had two Runner-Ups: Zoe MacIsaac (4th Runner-Up 10-11 years), and Isabelle Pilling (3rd Runner-Up 14-15 years). Super proud! Also, very proud of my parental team of volunteers, as we pulled this off without a hitch.
INSTEP WITH CALE BRETON FESTIVAL. Sydney, NS
Instep Festival is a busy 4 days each year, and this year we had one of our most super successful runs at this event. We took away Top Solo 12 years and under (Zoe MacIsaac: The Arena: Highland), Top Duo 12 years and under (Drea Shepherd & Olivia Burke: Hollarback Girls: Step Hip Hop Combo), and 3rd place overall in the entire competition for our group Highland Theatre piece called Red. Canadian Highland Dance Championships. Charlottetown, PEI.
We had a super successful Canadian Championships week. We had 14 dancers attend, and all came home with lots of medals, trophies and titles! Starting from my golden primaries, up through my premiers. Olivia won the 5th Runner Up title in the ScotDance Open Championships and 2nd Runner Up title in the Canadian Championships. Drea won the Pre-Championship Title. Our choreography ‘Dileas’ won the Canadian Choreography Challenge Title. Amazing week of fun, dance and friendships.
